How 30 Backlinks Generated a 5,600% Traffic Increase in 5 Months
This online education platform went from 50 visitors a month to over 200 a day in less than five months through strategic link building.
This online education platform went from 50 visitors a month to over 200 a day in less than five months through strategic link building and just crispy clean SEO. I’m going to show you exactly how we did that.
No theory. No fluff. Just the actual strategy we executed, the specific tactics we used, and the results we delivered.
The Client and The Challenge
This client owns three closely related businesses, all operating within the same niche. Each one focuses on a specific test to get a certification to become an educator in the United States.
They came to us through an agency partner. We work with loads of digital marketing agencies, SEO agencies, and consultants who are really good at the technical side, the content, and the on-site optimization. But when it comes to crafting and executing a winning link building strategy, they want to work with pros who only do that. So they decided to partner with us for this project.
Here’s the challenge. This business had a website online for a couple of years with not a lot of SEO traction. When they started working with our agency partner, we had the conversation and together put this strategy in place.
The real challenge? We had to beat websites like research.com and a bunch of universities with .edu domains. If you know anything about SEO, you know that this is one of the hardest tasks out there. Educational institutions have massive domain authority, tons of historical backlinks, and Google trusts them by default.
But we had a process. And the process works in any niche.
Competitive Gap Analysis (Non-Negotiable)
The first thing we did was run a competitive gap analysis. This is always the starting point for any winning link building campaign.
We figured out which winning businesses were ranked for the very specific course-related terms in this space. Then we dug into the entire backlink profile of those competitors. What were they doing? What kind of websites were they getting links from? What kind of anchor text were they using? How many links were they building? What kind of power and metrics did those links have? Absolutely everything.
We get an aggregated blend of what those winning sites look like. Then we did the same for the client and figured out how big the gap was.
It’s like saying, “This is my starting point. This is my destination.” Then from there, we help you put together an SEO GPS so you can have the most efficient route to get where you need to go.
The Link Building Strategy: Phases and Execution
Once we knew the gap, we decided to start with a fundamental layer of authority driving backlinks in order to really get this domain moving up in the SERPs.
The engagement operated at our Growth tier — delivered through our agency partner channel. Two phases, one clear objective:
Phase 1: Building the Foundation (Months 1-3)
Before we could go aggressive, we started slow and strategic. We built three to four backlinks per month to the homepage, plus about 30 percent of those links went to two key inner pages that really supported the main keywords the homepage wanted to rank for.
Anchor text selection: We simply followed the reverse engineering against the competitors. That math told us we should be focusing on branded anchor text to the homepage and some keyword-rich anchor text for those inner page links.
Link acquisition tactics: We went with good old-fashioned, true and tested guest post outreach and link insertion outreach. We focused on reaching out to real businesses that were related to their space and had a significantly higher domain rating than the client did.
For this first layer of 11 links, we got links ranging from DR 31 to DR 72. All contextual links. All on new quality content on those websites that were highly related to both the host website and the client.
Towards the end of month three, we saw that the impressions in Search Console were going up, as well as the general position of all the keywords we were targeting. This is a very good early sign that Google is giving you a lot more trust because whatever work you’ve been doing is pleasing the algorithm.
Phase 2: Ramping Up (Months 4-5)
We decided to ramp up the efforts. We did eight backlinks in month four and 12 backlinks in month five.
We kept the same mixture of guest posts and link insertions, but in reality, we weren’t doing more than two link insertions in any given month. The rest was all guest posts. I like new signals a lot more than I like the signals from link insertions, but sometimes you can get links from pages that already have a lot more page power. So you can balance out that combination between trust from high traffic websites, relevance from highly relevant sites, and then power from very strong domains or very strong pages.
As we ramped up these link building efforts, we actually landed some really powerful links with some DR 80 websites pointing to the client.
The Secret Weapon: Tier 2 Link Building
Here’s where it gets interesting. In months four and five, we really wanted to increase the amount of power, but we didn’t want to break velocity by having to build 20 or 30 backlinks, which would have been too many for this case.
So we decided to go through all the historical backlinks they already had that were very high quality, and then we built links to those backlinks to make them more powerful.
This is known as tier two link building. This is an absolutely overpowered tactic that I see very few people talk about in the SEO circles. And honestly, I don’t know why more people aren’t doing it because it’s just really, really powerful.
Instead of building 30 new tier one links, we strengthened the links they already had. This multiplied the impact of every existing backlink without triggering any velocity red flags.
Communication and Collaboration
Throughout the process, we met regularly with the agency partner. They were also meeting with the end client. We got on the same page, figured out what was most important for them, and checked what kind of work they were doing with their on-page optimization to see if there was anything we had to adjust.
We reported on progress and answered any questions around link building and the current results. Everybody stayed on the same page.
The Results: Let the Numbers Speak
To recap, we built 30 backlinks in five months. That’s it. That’s all it took in this particular case to bring the client to these results.
The client went from 50 clicks a month to 2,970 clicks from organic search during January 2025. All from Google.

They had 300,000 impressions, proving that there’s still an insane amount of keywords where we haven’t gotten to the top positions yet. They’re somewhere on the bottom of page one. That’s going to be the first growth they experience over the next six months.
Traffic growth: They went from 52 visitors in August 2024 to 2,970 visitors from organic search in January 2025. That’s a ridiculous 5,600 percent increase in just five months.

Algorithm survival: They survived two core updates and one spam update all throughout that process, proving that the work done was solid.
Keyword rankings: They went from zero to 505 keywords on page one in just five months.
Primary keyword: The main keyword they wanted to rank for, which is literally the name of the course they sell with the study guide, is already number one.
Featured snippets: They captured 11 feature snippets (the position at the very top of the SERPs that gets all the clicks).
AI overviews: They captured 10 AI overviews, which is basically the Google version of a ChatGPT result. This proves the work done so far is not only setting up the client for SEO success, but also for AI SEO, which some people call Answer Engine Optimization or Generative Engine optimization. The industry doesn’t seem to have found an agreement there yet.
This positions them to start getting a lot more traffic from AI as user behavior changes over the next few years. The work they’re doing now is helping them succeed in the future.
The Triple Win
But there’s more. Remember that I told you they had three different businesses in this niche? We built links for all three of them. And we had very similar results in all three of them.
This proves that when you follow a clean, proven process, you can always get positive results. It’s not luck. It’s not magic. It’s a data-driven link building strategy.

What Made This Campaign Work
Let me break down the key factors that made this campaign successful:
Strategic pacing: We didn’t rush. We built 3-4 links per month initially, then scaled to 8-12 as we saw positive signals. This natural velocity kept everything clean.
Quality over quantity: Every single link was from a real business with actual traffic. No PBNs. No link farms. No shortcuts.
Relevance mattered: We prioritized contextual relevance. The host sites were related to education, certifications, and professional development.
Anchor text discipline: We followed the competitor blueprint for anchor text ratios. Heavy on branded, strategic with keyword-rich anchors.
Tier 2 amplification: Instead of building more tier one links, we strengthened existing backlinks. This is how you multiply impact without increasing volume.
Comprehensive approach: We didn’t just focus on the homepage. We built supporting links to key inner pages that reinforced the homepage’s target keywords.
The Bottom Line
Thirty backlinks. Five months. A 5,600% traffic increase.
You don’t need hundreds of backlinks to move the needle. You need the right backlinks, built at the right pace, pointing to the right pages, with the right anchor text.
That’s what separates campaigns that work from campaigns that waste your budget.
