Let’s cut the overcomplicated crap: SEO truly is just content and backlinks (provided your site is built on a decent technical foundation, of course).
Now in the age of AI, content is completely commoditized and devalued as there are hundreds of tools that can spit out ANY piece of content you need in MINUTES. If this is news to you, go to Youtube and type “chat GPT for SEO” and panic. When you’re done, come back.
This makes SEO in 2023 a links game. Get links, win the game. Simple.
The question is WHAT links to get. Nope, not all made equal, I’m afraid.
In December of 2022 Google released the SpamBrain update.
This disgustingly smart AI engine checks EVERY backlink coming to YOUR site and decides whether to trust the link or not. If the link isn’t trusted, the link isn’t counted.
Read that again. Not trusted, not counted.
And now think of every dollar you’ve spent in links until today. Are you confident all those links are trusted by Google today? Do you even know how to tell a good from a bad link?
- Here’s the bad news: Most of your links are now worth nothing at all.
- Here’s the good news: So are most of your competitors’ links. That evens the field out a bit.
- Here’s the better news: They likely don’t know the above. Their agency doesn’t know. Their in-house SEO team doesn’t know.
But you do now, and so do we.
We’ve spent an outrageous amount of time getting VERY good at links.
We know EXACTLY how to tell how many links you need, and how to get you the type of links that Google trusts today AND will trust in one year’s time when their link-ignoring AI is even smarter. There’s a simple science behind
it all.
Honesty and Quality are Synonyms: Our Quality Control Exposed
Google does everything they can to nullify the usual ways to manipulate search. Most SEOs don’t “optimize” for Search, they merely hack shit around yours and some other sites to manipulate results. Google patches all hacks, eventually. And you as the business owner will be on the receiving end of their stick when they do. No bueno.
For a link to look organic (i.e. natural, not manipulated) it needs, well, to look organic.
✅ You want links from: Sites in your industry that are real businesses and do NOT sell links as a business model, but that have their own products and monetization methods (i.e. ads, affiliate links, info products, services, software…). Sites that they themselves rank well for the keywords they target because their SEO is solid and their links aren’t garbage. Sites that Google TRUSTS with at least 1,000 organic visitors every month. Pages on those sites that talk about the exact topic your website is about. Pages that quote you as a source for further information and on doing so, their content is better than it would be without the link to you.
You want it to look like a genuinely good business in your industry decided of their own accord to link to you because on doing so their content becomes better (just like when we link to Google above on the SpamBrain bit, so you can learn more). Those links survive SpamBrain AND push your rankings up like is nobody’s business.
❌ You DON’T want links from: Guest post farms. Hacked sites. PBNs (with lipstick or not). Random articles unrelated to your site. Sites with sketchy history. Sites that publicize “write for us” (shorthand for “we sell links”). Sites that Google does NOT send traffic to…. The list is longer. Our checklist includes 23+ other “No” items that we use to NOT get links for our clients from crappy sites.
TRAFFIC is the key metric. Domain Rating (Ahrefs’s metric, NOT Google’s) is the second best metric to gauge how strong a site is. Domain Authority (Moz’s) is ancient and useless. A handful of other metrics are useful (Trust Flow, Citation Flow, etc. We check them all) but here’s your TLDR
Good traffic and high DR = Good Link.
Anything else is WORTHLESS because of SpamBrain.
